The Happenings
This Substack is mostly focused on what I guess you’d call cultural criticism, movies, books, music, and observations about the zeitgeist.
But I still have dreams too. I have been spending a lot of time writing fiction, mostly short stories, but I do have a novel in progress too. I’m really excited to report that today, my second published story came out in Dream Pop Press. It’s a Kafka-inspired story about a special kind of madness, induced by the weight of our possessions. It’s called “The Garbage Artist,” and I’d love your feedback, if you will:

Also, if you’re interested, I have another published story (much different in tone and style) called “Doobuck’s Room.” I think I had Bernard Malamud in mind when I wrote it and it’s about a young girl who cleans rooms in a boarding house in West Virginia. It was published last year in Litbreak Magazine."

I want to point to a couple of other publications that I really have been enjoying.
One is the Creatively Christian Podcast. They interview a variety of creators about their art. I was interviewed there some time ago and really enjoyed the process. They just moved over to Substack, so I wanted to share this very inspirational publication. Click below to check them out:
Next, I am of a certain age (right smack in the middle of Generation X), so I’m probably the perfect audience for Oldster Magazine. I’m trying to spend my remaining years expanding my horizons and resisting the habits and pressures that make one’s world shrink and shrink. Oldster is a really fun, vibrant guide on that path. That’s all for this week. I’ll have a new essay for you on Monday! Don’t forget to share the newsletter on your social feeds if you can. I’ve got more subscribers than I ever thought I would, but I’d love to expand the conversation as much as possible.
