Walking with you through the falling leaves of existence, Danny. Same conclusions about the turdmill. Resisting manipulation. Still holding out for genuine connection. Truly blessed to have discovered that here.

Thanks Adrian. Somehow your line about the "falling leaves of existence," got me thinking about this song by Rodney Crowell and Emmylou Harris (co-written by the writer Mary Karr). In fact, now I wonder if that song was in the back of my mind this whole time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCNJD5Pb2uQ

Nice notes of Joyce and Bernanos here:

The leaves they left are rotted into lace

It's all grace

The track that often mists my autumn treks is this from my headier days: https://youtu.be/0C9Vuk9K0HM?feature=shared

Oh that's wonderful, Adrian! I'm always on the lookout for meditative music to have on while I'm working or thinking or writing and that hits the spot. Much obliged

I empathise & sympathise. SM has tapped into our healthy need to be seen & weaponised it. I am interested to hear more about your experience with Substack. To me, it seems like more of the same. Silos & like driven. Just like Twitter, only more polite. Though my Twitter experience has been more positive than most. It has widened the scope for finding those like-minded & has allowed me to interact with them (even if superficially) & also to find writing & groups I wouldn’t have otherwise. It also regularly weighs me down, for all the reasons you cite above. I hope you experience an unburdening with your retreat.

Thanks so much Jessica. And yes I believe you are not alone in having found new worlds on Twitter. I suppose I did too for a while, but the echo-chambering that platform incentivized was too debilitating for me (and I frankly think that Bluesky is the same kind of conformity machine, to be honest -- it's not the content, it's the form, for me at least). As for Substack. You are correct that there is a lot of striving that goes on here for sure. And the pressure to tag people in Notes and to cross-post and to build your list is a distraction-waiting-to-happen, I think. I do think that the platform allows for you to engage as you will, however. I'm perfectly happy to have a little home here on the outskirts of Substack town, away from the glittery, "Paid Subscriber" downtown. :) Ultimately, I think that the longer form of the platform is more satisfying. For now at least.

Outskirts vs downtown 😄. Longer form, yes, seems the key difference. Notes schmotes. Thanks for replying.
