I enjoyed the movie as well. The cinematography was amazing- from the rotating camera around the campfire, the rock drop scene, the dark woods with the last survivor. I also loved the high tension ending, wowza! How about the toy car/truck scene?! The highlighted exaggerated strength of the killing machine was also fun. I never put much thought to the NPC in movies... interesting insight appreciated.

Great review, Danny. Yes, dissociation is morally disquieting in today’s video screen world. I was playing a vid game with an AC-130 episode and suddenly recalled a virtually identical documentary scene.

Thanks Adrian. Yea I've never really gotten into video games very deeply (since the Super-Nintendo anyway). We have an X Box and I basically only play one game - some Sonic the Hedgehog car racing game.

Your comment has me thinking about something else though. I did go see 1917 in the theater (last movie before Covid, I think!). There was a lot of the same video game technique in that movie. Yet it worked differently for me. It didn't create that "dissociation" that you describe. It was more like immersion. I remember being appalled by the violence of war when that movie used this perspective. I'm even more curious about the difference (between 1917 and IAVN) now that I think of that.

Good point. I guess in the hands of a capable director, the camera can be used both to repel and compel. Enjoying memories of Super Mario Kart now.
